Evergreen Trees
Evergreen trees come in many shapes and sizes; however, most evergreen trees will grow to be large trees over 40 feet tall. While some fir trees can remain somewhat narrow, most evergreen trees can obtain a spread of 20 feet or more. Some evergreen tree species may release chemicals into the soil that can kill all other plants within the canopy of the evergreen tree. If you plant evergreen trees, allow a lot of space for the tree to grow and spread.
Evergreen trees are acceptable for use in general landscaping and are preferred when meeting City buffering requirements in commercial applications. Evergreen trees are not acceptable for use as street trees.
Pine, Spruce, Juniper and Arborvitae will grow in most locations in Springville. Other evergreen trees should not be planted west of 400 West because of higher pH soils. Many evergreen trees will not do well in areas with high water tables.
Deer will forage on most evergreen trees in the winter. Spruce, Juniper, White Fir, and Ponderosa Pine seem to be less palatable for deer; however, during heavy winters deer will feed on almost any evergreen. If you live near the foothills, or where deer are known to winter, you may want to spray your evergreen trees with some sort of deer repellent each winter.
